The Calvin Cycle Section 6.2.
 The cycle builds sugar from smaller molecules by using ATP and the reducing power of electrons carried by NADPH  The Calvin cycle has three phases:
Photosynthesis Converts sunlight energy into chemical energy.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
Photosynthesis. Objectives: Standard 1f Students will learn that chloroplast organelles inside plant cells capture sunlight energy. Students will learn.
Photosynthesis. Pigments of Photosynthesis Pigments are molecules that absorb specific wavelengths (energies) of light and reflect all others. Chlorophyll.
Photosynthesis and Calvin Cycle. Light Reactions Energy from the sun in the chloroplasts breaks up the Water Molecule (Hydrolysis) The Hydrogen Ions are.
The Calvin Cycle Also known as the dark reaction.
Calvin Cycle Objective: understand Calvin cycle and how it is different from light dependent parts of photosynthesis.
To sum it up… Light dependent reactions use: water, ADP, NADP+ Light dependent reactions produce: oxygen, ATP, NADPH ATP and NADPH provide energy to build.
Warm-up 1. Where do the light-dependent reactions take place? 2. Where do free e - s first gain E from the sun during the light-dependent reactions? 3.
Calvin Cycle Chapter Learning Target 3 (10.3) I can describe how the Calvin cycle uses ATP and NADPH to convert carbon dioxide to sugar.

The Calvin Cycle Or the Dark Side of Photosynthesis NOTE: ONLY WRITE DOWN THE SLIDES WITH THE BLACK BACKGROUND!!! THEY ARE A SUMMARY OF THE PREVIOUS SLIDES!

The purpose of photosynthesis to make sugars The purpose of photosynthesis to make sugars. It involves a light reaction and a light independent reaction. The purpose of the light reaction is to make the energy to needed to "drive" the Calvin cycle.

Overview-Light Rxn 1. 18 ATP are made from 18ADP + 18P 2. Water is split. e- + H are used for #3. 6 O2 are released. 3. 12 NADPH are made.

The purpose of photosynthesis to make glucose The purpose of photosynthesis to make glucose. It has a light reaction and a light independent reaction. The the light reaction makes the energy to needed to for the Calvin cycle to make glucose Overview-Light Rxn 1. 18 ATP are made from 18ADP + 18P 2. Water is split. H+ are used to reduce NADPH , O2 are released and e- are used in the light reaction. 3. 12 NADPH are made.

Overview of the Calvin Reaction 3 CO2 -> PGAL 9 ATP -> 9 ADP + 9 P 6 NADPH-> 6 NADP + 6 H

Overview of the Calvin Reaction 3 CO2 -> PGAL 9 ATP -> 9 ADP + 9 P 6 NADPH-> 6 NADP + 6 H

*Note-PGAL is a triose. In order to make glucose, a hexose, the Calvin Cycle must be run twice. Therefore, 6 CO2, 18 ATP and 12 NADPH are needed to make glucose. Calvin cycle 2X 6 CO2 -> C6H12O6 (from 2 PGAL) 18 ATP -> 18 ADP + 18 P 12 NADPH-> 12 NADP + 12 H

The following illustrates the Calvin cycle The following illustrates the Calvin cycle. The various compounds include all of their atoms.

This slide, shows how 2 molecules of PGAL are turned into a molecule of glucose and how it can be turned into starch.
