Amorphous (adj.) Formless; lacking shape or definition The cat was so overweight that its figure became amorphous when it lied down.

Assuage (v.) Ease or lessen; satisfy; soothe Brandon required painkillers to assuage his pain after getting his wisdom teeth removed.

Capricious (adj.) Unpredictable In New England, the weather is so capricious that it’s hard to plan events no matter what season it is!

Disdain (n.) The feeling that someone or something is worthless Cheaters and liars are regarded with disdain by many people.

Evanescent (adj.) Fleeting; vanishing Ghosts are hard to catch on camera because they are evanescent and don’t show themselves for long.

Hardy (adj.) Strong; sturdy A running back must be hardy enough to take repeated hits from opposing teams.

Mercenary (adj.) Interested in money or gain The Doctor in The Canterbury Tales is a wonderful physician, but he likes his job for mercenary reasons.

Pretentious (adj.) Pompous; outwardly extravagant Emily’s chronic love for name-brand items turned her into a pretentious person who only cares about how she looks.
