OUTREACH Initiatives and Best Practices Anne Grybowski Jamie Kosh Student Aid Coordinators – Outreach The Pennsylvania State University

Outreach initiatives and best practices Why do it: Community service Promotion of your institution Networking Distribution of accurate information

Outreach initiatives and best practices Why we don’t do more: time cost fear assuming

Outreach – why do it Community service Giving back to your surrounding communities Helping local students

Outreach – why do it promotion of your institution Great way to help your institution Help students consider new options Career & guidance opportunities for students that really need your help

Outreach – why do it networking Meeting new admission & aid counselors Connecting with guidance & high school administrators Working with different types of professionals

Outreach – why do it distribution of accurate information being proactive in a reactive profession When the power goes out…you call the electric company when families have a financial aid issue… they call everyone but the aid office!!!

Outreach – why we don’t do more time Spending time after a full day of work is not a “Happy Time” … same with weekend programs Time out of the office means delegating

Outreach – why we don’t do more cost Simply not enough money in the budget to pay for travel expenses … let alone several events

Outreach – why we don’t do more fear Public speaking Trying something new Stepping outside your comfort zone Not if, but when…

Outreach – why we don’t do more assuming Someone is already doing that “They already KNOW this!” Reach out to schools, even if you THINK they have someone presenting to them

Outreach – best practices share your story!! pasfaa pheaa school sponsored

Outreach – resources pasfaa Guidance counselor workshops College fair volunteer Pheaa Connect to your higher education access partner Youtube Fafsa website Studentaid.psu.edu/tutorials
