Within the cirrhotic liver are foci of altered hepatocytes (FAH) that harbors multiple hepatic cell lineages including aggregates of hepatic cancer progenitor cells (HcPCs). The damaged liver provides a microenvironment that is conducive for tumor progression, which allows HcPCs to become cancer stem cells (CSCs).
