Tech-etiquette: Principles [The Pen is Mightier than the keyboard] Evidence shows you absorb less Technology distracts Be aware of what you’ll miss Simple, few and relevant As part of the team ‘ground-rules’ or regular meeting practice At the beginning of events and one-off meetings Agree tech-etiquette in advance Appoint (or offer to be) a note taker Use multi-media to project papers for all Arrange a ‘phone check break every 2 hours, write up / provide wifi passwords in advance; agree photo / twitter ‘opportunities’ etc Offset the need for technology ... Tech-etiquette

Tech-etiquette: Before Meetings [The Pen is Mightier than the keyboard] To use your device, confirming expectations of the group If you are expecting an urgent call or text etc. If you want to take or publish photo (or a recording) Arrive early to prepare – and gain agreement to use in advance if expecting a call, choose a place where you can leave the room easily Charge your device ahead to avoid trip hazards from leads Configure your device in advance, obtaining passwords to wifi passwords, displaying papers etc Minimise potential disruption during the meeting Disable sounds, pop ups etc. Place the monitor where it will be the least distracting Phones on vibrate should be in easy reach within your pocket or bag (not on tables) Reduce potential for distractions during the meeting Tech-etiquette

Keep it to a minimum Avoid pounding the keyboard If essential, subtly check your ‘phone Excuse yourself and take calls outside Be discreet Actively listen and continue your contributions Maintain eye contact - and monitor your body language Use e-pen and long hand notes when taking down key points Pay attention GOLDEN RULE Do not wear virtual reality headphones! Tech-etiquette
