About the 1960’s Mostly when people think of the 1960’s the think of afro’s, banana seats, bell-bottom jeans, tie dye, go-go boots, The Beatle and so much more. People tend to forget the simple fact that the 1960’s were huge stepping stones for the women’s right movement.

Married with children by 20 (median age) The 60’s “average” woman stayed at home Married with children by 20 (median age) High School education Husband=breadwinner

Roe vs Wade

Roe v Wade 1973 Making it legal to assist a woman’s decision to have a abortion. Question at hand was “Does the Constitution embrace the right of a woman to obtain an abortion, nullifying the Texas prohibition?” Ruling over all was under the 14th amendment women were allowed to have abortions/be pro choice Under state regulation. Later was changed making it where women couldn’t be into their 3rd trimester(46 states followed ruling)

1993 P.P of Southern P. Casey Pro choice or Pro life 23/24 weeks couldn’t have an abortion due to fetal viability. Major debate against anyone with a view on this issue……

Game-changer Prohibits discrimination in school sports.(Race, sex and gender) Not just about sports Gov. wouldn’t fund any school that showed discrimination in any extracurricular activities. Although this was a huge step forward for women’s right movement females still lagged in sports. “quotas” : certains amount of slots “must show the schools is”TRYING” to expand opportunities for female athletes. Title IX doesn’t mean male teams must be cut down. Men get 36% more scholarships than woman. Colleges have 53% female students Only 43% of athletes are female. Title IX

“Instructions were given to the girls who took part in the fall tennis program and several of the girls went on to compete in scheduled meets with other schools in the Big Nine Conference. Volleyball and basketball provided recreational activity for interested girls during the winter season. These girls were given the opportunity to participate in ‘playdays’ where they competed against other area schools.” Title IX

DOES TITLE IX REALLY MATTER?

Little Girl “Little girls don’t run” “Little girls don’t play outside” “Little girl you’ll get more freedom when you’re a woman” “Young lady you ain’t there yet” “No you can’t go to the dance” “ No you ain’t going on no date are you crazy” “Are you a stay at home mom with 3 children and a husband with a house in the suburbs? then no you ain’t a woman yet” Now here I am 23 married about to have my 3rd child no job no real friends and a husband who really doesn’t appreciate me but hey at least I’m a woman.
