The most common kind of family is the nuclear family; many people also believe it is the best kind of family Objectives of the lesson are: To define the term nuclear family and to name one political party that supports this family structure To be able to recall points about the Functionalist and Feminist perspective of the family. To apply knowledge to an exam questions

What do all these images have in common? Question…

Family Types Nuclear Family Extended family

Defining the Nuclear Family A family consisting of a man, a women (heterosexual couple) and their children

Nuclear Family (cereal packet family) Nuclear family are also know as cereal packed family by the media. The media have traditionally portrayed the traditional family as mum and dad having breakfast with kids before dad heads off the work (bread winner) and mother stays as home cooking ,cleaning and caring for children (3C’s). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfKjXXEQbQo

In some parts of Britain, extended families are common. They consist of wider family who have a close or daily contact with the nuclear family. Grandparents, brothers and sisters may live close and share family life. Extended Families

Functionalist Theory: Nuclear Family In the 1940s, George Murdock said that all societies have nuclear families. In 1950s Talcott Parsons said that a nuclear family is essential for the proper socialisation of children and of parents. Functionalist Theory: Nuclear Family

Who are the Conservatives? A bit of politics! Who are the Conservatives? A political party that has traditional values

Conservatives generally support what they call ‘family values’: They believe that… - A nuclear family is best for everyone. - Other forms of family are not as good. - A working father should support his children economically. - The mother should look after and care for children/old people and those who are ill.   Conservative’s view on the nuclear family

David Cameron – Conservative Prime Minister in 2010 said he wanted to encourage people to marry because it was good for the children. He viewed family breakdown as a problem for society. He believes in the nuclear family.

What is a feminist? A bit more theory – useful for contrasting in the exam! People who think that men and women should be equal

The functionalist theory has been questioned by Feminists. Feminist sociologists say that the basic family is the mother and child. They say that other types of family are perfectly good if children are loved and cared for. Feminist Theory
