Think and Write How do you know whether to multiply or divide when you read a word problem? Do certain words help you to understand?

Let’s look at the Envision Video for this lesson and take the quiz. Today’s Lesson In this lesson, you will use models to help you understand and solve multiplication and division problems. Let’s look at the Envision Video for this lesson and take the quiz.

Multiplication Number Stories When you multiply, you combine equal groups. You will see key words related to addition. Some examples are: In All Altogether Combine

Division Number Stories When you divide, you find the number of equal groups or the number of items in an equal group. Look for words like: Equal groups Divided/Sorted/Grouped into

Problem 1 The students are having a picnic. There are 56 students and 7 picnic tables. How many students will sit at each picnic table if there are an equal number of students at every table?

Problem 2 Hot dog rolls come in packages of 8. How many packages of hot dog rolls are needed if the group has 75 hot dogs? How many rolls will be left over?

Problem 3 It costs $7 to rent a canoe. If 63 students rent canoes, how much will they spend altogether?

Problem 4 45 students are signed up to rent boats. If 4 people fit in a boat, how many boats are needed in order to accommodate all of the students?

Problem 5 There are 78 campers at the campfire. If each camper roasts 14 marshmallows, how many marshmallows will be roasted in all? If there are 200 marshmallows in a bag, how many bags are needed for the group?

Lesson Wrap Up In this lesson, we learned about how to understand multiplication and division problems. Reflection in Notebook: The strategy that works best for me when solving problems is.
