Objective SWBAT describe the levels of biological classification and use binomial nomenclature to describe species.

Aristotle and Linnaeus Aristotle (384-322 BC) classified all organisms as plants or animals. Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778) created a classification system with multiple levels.

Levels of Classification

Levels of Classification Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species

Binomial Nomenclature Binomial: Two names Nomenclature: A system of names Binomial nomenclature: A system of describing organisms with two names – genus name and species name. Homo sapiens = humans Canis lupus = wolf Panthera leo = lion

Two Different Species Lion Wolf Kingdom Animalia Phylum Chordata Class Mammalia Order Carnivora Family Felidae Canidae Genus Panthera Canis Species leo lupus What is the smallest classification level these two species have in common? What is the scientific name for the lion? What is the scientific name for the wolf?

Another one… Lion Wolf Dog Kingdom Animalia Phylum Chordata Class Mammalia Order Carnivora Family Felidae Canidae Genus Panthera Canis Species leo lupus familiaris Which species is more closely related to the wolf – the lion or the dog? What is the smallest classification group shared by the wolf and the dog? What is the scientific name for the dog?
