The Solar System!! by Austin Vickery

The Solar System From our small world we have gazed upon the cosmic ocean for thousands of years. Ancient astronomers observed points of light that appeared to move among the stars. They called these objects "planets," meaning wanderers, and named them after Roman deities—Jupiter, king of the gods; Mars, the god of war; Mercury, messenger of the gods; Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, and Saturn, father of Jupiter and god of agriculture

The inner planets

Earth Earth, our home planet, is the only planet in our solar system known to harbor life. All of the things we need to survive are provided under a thin layer of atmosphere. void of space. Earth is made up of complex, interactive systems that are often unpredictable. Air, water, land , and life—including humans—combine forces to create a constantly changing world that we are striving to understand.  Scientists around the world have discovered many things about our planet by working together and sharing their findings.

Mercury In Roman mythology Mercury is the god of commerce, travel and thievery, the Roman counterpart of the Greek god Hermes, the messenger of the Gods.

Mars Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the seventh largest. Mars is sometimes referred to as the Red Planet. The first spacecraft to visit Mars was Mariner 4  in 1965.

Venus Venus is the second planet from the Sun and the sixth largest. Venus  is the goddess of love and beauty. Venus can be referred as Earths sister planet.

Outer planets Jupiter- is the fifth planet from the sun and is the largest. Saturn- is the sixth planet from the sun and is the second largest. Uranus- the seventh planet from the sun and is sixth in size and just visible to the human eye. Neptune- Neptune was discovered 1846 astronomers thought it was a star.

Earths surface Most of the earths surface is water (70%). 30% is taken up by the seven continental landmasses.  Earth has 5 oceans pacific, Atlantic, Indian, southern ocean, arctic.

Mars surface Mars surface is dry wasteland marked by old volcanoes and impact craters. The “red planets’ surface area is about 28% of Earth.

Curiosity Curiosity is a rover that has battled 1,000with its new technique for covering ground faster. It has a camera built in to it. They used to think mars had a lot of water.

Earth and Mars Alike Mars and Earth are very similar in terms of their day length.  A day on mars last 1.03 Earth days.

Earth and mars differences Mars is much colder than earth. Mars is only about one-half the diameter of Earth. Mars has 38% of the gravity we have here on Earth
