From local to European war

What you will learn Austria-Hungary’s reaction to the Assassination The meaning of “ultimatum” Why Austria-Hungary was so aggressive Why Russia, Germany, France and Britain got involved

Recipe for war Naval Race The Alliance System Tensions in the Balkans Assassination at Sarajevo Kaiser Wilhelm II

The Austrian Ultimatum Austria-Hungary was furious and accused the Serbian government of planning the assassination Austria-Hungary sent a 10-point ultimatum to Serbia “Ultimatum”: a warning stating that unless someone meets your conditions you will take action against them

An excuse to declare war? Why might Austria-Hungary have wanted to fight a war against Serbia before Assassination? Austria-Hungary saw the Assassination as an excuse to attack Serbia Investigations showed murders organised by Black Hand but did not wait for conclusive proof

The Black Hand Society Fierce Slav nationalists: hated Austria and prepared to kill for freedom Goal: creation of a Greater Serbia Secret society with links to the Serbian government and army "...before God, on my honour and my life, that I will execute all missions and commands without question. I swear before God, on my honor and on my life, that I will take all the secrets of this organization into my grave with me."

The Austrian Ultimatum Austria-Hungary delivered a 10-point ultimatum to Serbia The terms of the ultimatum were very harsh Austria-Hungary hoped that Serbia would reject the terms and this would give her reason to declare war on Serbia Serbia was accused of plotting the murders Austria-Hungary threatened Serbia with war if she refused to agree to the 10 points
