Week 23 Tuesday 2/7/17 Question: Answer: What are fossil fuels? Give examples. Answer: Fossil fuels are considered non- renewable resources. They come from the semi-preserved remains of once living things. Examples are coal, oil, and natural gas.

It CANNOT be replenished within a human lifetime, so fossil fuels are considered NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES

KEY TERMS Crude oil: unrefined petroleum – straight from the ground Fossil fuel: a natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed from the remains of ancient organisms. Off-shore drilling: a process that is used to extract oil from beneath the ocean floor. Executive order: a rule or order issued by the president to an executive branch of the government and having the force of law. Keystone Pipeline: an oil pipeline system linked between Canada and the United States. Energy security: the affordable and accessible source(s) of energy that a country can provide for itself without the need or help from other countries. EPA: Environmental Protection Agency - an agency of the Federal government of the United States which was created for the purpose of protecting human health and the environment

Offshore Drilling

Keystone Pipeline click here to learn about the controversy concerning the Dakota Access Pipeline

Obama Administration VS Trump Administration ARTICLE ONE: Obama uses executive order to prevent Trump from offshore drilling. As you read, think about… What is happening? Why would Obama write an executive order to prevent offshore drilling? Why would Trump want to expand offshore drilling? What are the pros and cons? ARTICLE TWO: Trump overrides Obama’s “construction block” to open access on the Keystone Pipeline. Why would Obama prevent the construction of the Keystone Pipeline? Why would Trump write an executive order to open construction to the Keystone Pipeline?

Offshore Drilling – Federal Water Keystone Pipeline Describe the issue: What is the main topic of the article? Obama’s Reasoning: Why is Obama for or against this action? Describe the pros and cons when appropriate. Trump’s Reasoning: Why is Trump for or against this action? Describe the pros and cons when appropriate. Obama wrote an executive order banning drilling for oil on Federal waters of the Arctic and the Gulf of Mexico to help ensure that we protect the environment. This is done to counter Trump’s plan to expand offshore drilling. Protestors are gathering across the county to fight against the approval of the pipeline. Trump signed an executive order overriding Obama’s denial of construction on the pipeline in November, 2015, allowing the construction to begin again. Obama wants to move away from fossil fuels and invest more in clean energy sources. $7 billion was invested to drill in the Arctic and the results were disappointing. Obama is against this action because the pipeline is rerouted across the Sioux Indian land without their consent. Obama also states that it is all risk and no reward – putting our air and water at risk. Con: environmental destruction! Trump is against this action because he wants to unleash a wave of fossil fuel development to help boost our economy, lower fuel prices, and create more jobs. Trump is for building the pipeline because it would create thousands of jobs and he is requiring that all materials used to build the pipeline come from the US. Pro: Trump says that he would grant US taxpayers a share of the profits. It would also provide us with more energy security.
