Dynamic eco-efficiency modeling for recycling of C&D waste. Rolf André Bohne, Håvard Bergsdal and Helge Brattebø Industrial Ecology Programme Norwegian University of Science and Technology NTNU Trondheim

Purpose of study Evaluate C&D waste strategies Present results in a meaningful way to decision makers Dynamic projections of future waste generation Which data are available, and where is the information scarce? What affects future waste generation? What waste treatment options should be prioritized? How do different parts of waste treatment systems perform? Evaluate according to both economic and environmental aspects Are the same treatment options preferrable regardless of localization?

Method Estimate the amount of waste generating activities (m2/year) Determine specific waste generation factors (kg/m2) Calculate overall waste generation projections (kg/year) Use waste projections as input to scenarios on waste treatment Evaluation by using Eco-efficiency to assess the relationship between economic and environmental aspects Plotting economic and environmental performance of waste treatment alternatives to visualize the results and compare the treatment options

Findings Long term models needed due to increasing amounts of waste and ageing of buildings Need for improved knowledge of building stock, lifetime, composition, economy Yet valuable results Significant variations within a country, different solutions should be applied according to localization Eco-efficiency models suitable in guiding local policy makers and actors
