Water Rangers By Hyllary A. Jin Lee Ruri I.

How does water gets contaminated? When ocean water becomes enriched in dissolved nutrients, from sources such as agricultural runoff and sewage outflows, these nutrients stimulate the growth of phytoplankton. As the phytoplankton die and sink to the bottom, their decomposition consumes the dissolved oxygen that other benthic organisms need to survive.

Our water is being polluted and there has something that we can do. Million of people die because of diseases in the water. People overuse the water that they have and we should start making a difference. Help Save Clean

Keep trash and chemicals out of storm drains. This includes pet waste. Storm water from storm drains flows into the sea carrying pollutants which can lead to beach closures. Plant a native plant garden. Native plants can help you reduce the use of water and fertilizers. Avoid use of chemical fertilizers, instead make your own mulch and use organic fertilizers only when needed. Recycle used motor oil. Dont let motor oil spill on the ground because rain will wash it into the storm-water drains, and from there out to sea, where it can harm or kill marine life. Find an oil- recycling center near you. Dispose of household cleaners properly. Household cleaning products, paint, pesticides, fluorescent light bulbs, and batteries pose a threat to water quality. Find more information about free collection centers. More Helping

According to Sustainable Table in the 2000 National Water Quality Inventory conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), agricultural activity was identified as a source of pollution for 48% of stream and river water. An estimated 10 trillion gallons a year of untreated storm water runs off roofs, roads, parking lots, and other paved surfaces, often through the sewage systems, into rivers and waterways that serve as drinking water supplies and flow to our beaches, increasing health risks, degrading ecosystems, and damaging tourist economies. But cities of all sizes are saving money by employing green infrastructure as part of their solutions to storm water pollution and sewage overflow problems. Polluted Water

According to water pollution guide be careful about what you throw down your sink or toilet. Dont throw paints, oils or other forms of litter down the drain By having more plants in your garden you are preventing fertilizer, pesticides and contaminated water from running off into nearby water sources. Dont throw litter into rivers, lakes or oceans. Help clean up any litter you see on beaches or in rivers and lakes, make sure it is safe to collect the litter and put it in a nearby dustbin. Help! How can we help polluted water?

According to Icra wash only full loads in the clothes washer. Washing small loads uses over twice as much water per pound of laundry. Wash only full loads in the dishwasher. An efficient dishwasher usually uses much less water than washing dishes by hand. Use low-angle sprinklers that produce droplets of water. Sprinklers that spray water high into the air or produce a mist lose water through evaporation. Save How can we save water?

According to NRDC use nontoxic household products whenever possible Recycle and dispose of all trash properly. Never flush non- degradable products -- such as disposable diapers or plastic tampon applicators -- down the toilet. They can damage the sewage treatment process and end up littering beaches and waters Use natural fertilizers. Apply natural fertilizer such as compost, manure, bone meal or peat whenever possible. Ask your local hardware and garden supply stores to stock these natural fertilizers. You can also buy a composting setup at a garden supply or hardware store, or by mail. Clean How can we clean our water?
