Mathematics in Grades 8-12 Brewton City Schools

8th Grade Math- Pre-Algebra Will continue to follow the College- and Career-Ready Standards for 8th grade mathematics Does not count towards a high school math credit or towards high school GPA Can still be take other honors level courses in high school There will be more math offerings and AP courses offered at TRM as students advance Students must have 4 math credits to graduate from high school including Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II To graduate with Advanced Academic Endorsement students must take Algebra I, Honors Geometry, and Algebra II w/Trigonometry To graduate with Honors students must take Algebra I, Honors Geometry, Algebra II w/Trig, and Pre-Calculus

8th grade Honors Algebra I This is an Honors class for high school credit Counts towards high school GPA (is weighted approximately 0.3) Allows the math track: 9th grade Honors Geometry, 10th grade Algebra II with Trig, 11th grade Pre-Calculus, 12th grade AP Calculus Once you earn high school credit, you can not repeat the course (i.e. if you make a C, that is your grade in Algebra) Can drop down to regular math courses in high school, but it might affect graduating with honors ATTENDANCE in class is essential. Students who are in Honors or advanced courses should make every effort to be in school. (i.e. appointments, Pep Rallies, check-ins/outs, etc.) HONORS Algebra I will be a faster paced course. This course will require dedication and a strong work ethic for classwork, homework & studying. While we have been able to accommodate flexible scheduling in 7th grade to make up lessons and for remediation, this will not be an option in the 8th grade honors schedule. Grading in Honors Courses is different than regular classes: tests 60% of grade, quizzes 20% of grade, homework/daily 20% of grade Honors will have a comprehensive semester exam, 20% of total semester grade

GPA Examples Scale Reg. Class Honors Class AP Class B+ 89-87 3.3 3.6 4.3 B 86-83 3.0 3.3 4.0 B- 82-80 2.7 3.0 3.7 C+ 79-77 2.3 2.6 3.3

Recommendations on Registration Forms If your child has been recommended for Honors Algebra I, this was based upon ACT Aspire scores and 7th grade course work. Recommended students must have a parent signature to “opt out” of this course. Students who are recommended for 8th Grade Pre-Algebra who want to take Honors Algebra I in the 8th grade should have a parent call Mrs. Cave or Mrs. Coale at 867-8420.
