objectives Students will identify and/or describe the general functions of the major systems (respiratory system) of the human body. Students will identify and/or describe how the major systems of the human body interact to maintain homeostasis.

Essential question How does the circulatory and respiratory systems work together to allow the body to maintain homeostasis?

Vocabulary Lungs: each of the pair of organs situated within the rib cage, consisting of elastic sacs with branching passages into which air is drawn, so that oxygen can pass into the blood and carbon dioxide be removed Respiratory System: is the group of organs that takes in oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide

Materials moving around the body Respiration (breathing) is the transportation of oxygen from the environment to tissues and cells and the transportation of carbon dioxide and wastes away from the cells and into the environment Oxygen moves into the blood from the lungs when you inhale The oxygen is taken to the cells to help with cellular respiration The body moves carbon dioxide, a waste product of cellular respiration, from the body cells, into capillaries, carried through the blood to the lungs where it Is freed back into the environment

Parts of the respiratory system

The Nose, Pharynx, Larynx, and trachea Air enters your body through your nose and mouth From your nose it travels into the pharynx (throat) The pharynx branches into two tubes the esophagus, which leads to the stomach, and the larynx which leads to the lungs The trachea, or wind pipe, splits into two branches called bronchi and each one connects to a lung

Bronchioles, Alveoli and diaphragm Inside the lungs, bronchioles lead to sacs called alveoli When you inhale, the diaphragm contracts and allows you to suck in air When you exhale, the diaphragm relaxes and it allows the it to by let out So, as you breathe, the air is sucked in and forced through the thin walls of the alveoli and forced into the blood vessels surrounding them

Diseases in the Respiratory system Asthma: When it the amount of air is reduced because of the inflammation of the bronchi Pneumonia: Inflammation of the lungs that could cause you to suffocate Emphysema: When the alveoli have been damaged and you can’t get the right amount of oxygen to the blood properly

Maintaining Homeostasis The circulatory and respiratory systems work together to maintain homeostasis when the lungs transport the oxygen to the blood and the heart pups the blood to the body cells use I to survive. They work together when the carbon dioxide is moved to the blood and it is brought back to the lungs where it is moved back into the air

How do materials move through the body? High order question How do materials move through the body?

Review/quiz What is the MAIN function of the Respiratory system? Label the Chart with the Correct Organs (6 and 9 are the same thing) What is the MAIN function of the Respiratory system? Keep the body healthy Take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide Help the body move
