Connecting Motion with Forces Unit 6 Connecting Motion with Forces
Force a “push or pull” that one object exerts on another
A Force; can change the velocity (speed and/or direction) of an OBJECT *this is ACCELERATION
Balanced FORCES are equal in size and opposite in direction act on a single object
When the FORCES acting on an object are Balanced; The object will not ACCELERATE * (will not have a change in velocity)
NET FORCE occurs when the forces acting on an object are Unbalanced
A NET FORCE acting on an object; always causes the object to ACCELERATE in the DIRECTION of the force
~ I don’t want to if I don’t have to INERTIA Tendency of an object to resist any change in its motion ~ I don’t want to if I don’t have to
Due to INERTIA; a moving object will keep moving at the same speed and in the same direction unless a NET FORCE acts upon the object
Due to INERTIA; an object at rest will remain at rest unless a NET FORCE acts upon the object
INERTIA depends upon MASS! when the MASS of an object increases the INERTIA of an object increases
NEWTON’S FIRST LAW OF MOTION also known as “Law of Inertia”
1st LAW OF MOTION states: If there is no net force acting on an object, it will remain at rest or continue moving at a constant velocity
FRICTION FORCE opposes motion the surfaces must be touching each other
FRICTION FORCE * for example: eating makes it possible to do many things we take for granted * for example: eating
Gravity The force that attracts us to the center of the Earth. * pulls at 9.8 m/s2 * depends on 2 things ♦ mass of object ♦ distance of separation
Weight Measurement of the pull of gravity on the mass of an object. FORMULA * Weight = mass ● gravity (weight is directly related to gravity) (mass is never affected by gravity)
