1 Intention Seeking clarification Asking for reason and evidence Exploring an alternative view Test implications and consequences Questions about the dialog Can you explain that…? What do you mean by…? Can you give me an example…? How does that help…? Does anyone have a question to ask about that idea? Why do you think that? How do we know that? What are your reasons for? Do you have evidence of? Can you justify your opinion? Can you put it another way? Is there another point of view…? What if someone suggested that…? What would you say if someone disagreed? What is the difference between that view and…? What follows (what can we work out) from what you say? Does that view agree with earlier? What would be the consequence of that? How would you test to see if that was true? What kind of question is that? How does that help us with the question we are asking? Can someone summarise the progress so far? Are we any closer to answering our question? Where did we get stuck with the question? What could we change next time we answer this type of question? Explaining, defining, giving examples, supporting, enquiring Forming an argument, assumptions, reasons, evidence Re-stating a view, speculation, distinctions, alternative views Implications, consistency, consequences, testing for truth Questioning, analysing, connecting, summarising.

6 Rhetorical Questions Wasn’t Hitler a great leader? He turned Germany around and made them what they are today. Rhetorical questions are even more powerful if you use a string of them: "Isn't that a great display? Don't you love the way the text picks up the colors? Doesn't it use space really well? Wouldn't you love to have a display like that in your classroom?
