Equations with Variables on Both Sides Day 2 Mrs. Book
Review: Equations with Variable on Both SIdes To solve an equation that has variables on both sides use the Addition or Subtraction Properties of Equality to get the variables on one side of the equation.
An equation that is true for every value of the variable. Identity An equation that is true for every value of the variable.
Identity Example 10-8a = 2(5-4a) 10-8a = 10 – 8a +8a +8a
An equation that is not true has no solution.
Example of No Solution Equation 6m – 5 = 7m + 7 –m 6m – 5 = 6m + 7 -6m + 6m – 5 = -6m + 6m + 7 -5 = 7 No solution
Solve the equation. Determine if the equation is an identity or if it has no solution 18s – 5 =3 (6s -2) 18s – 5 = 18s – 6 -18s + 18s – 5 = -18s + 18s – 6 -5 = -6 No Solution
Solve the equation. Determine if the equation is an identity or if it has no solution 0 = .98b + .02b – b 0 = b – b 0 = 0 Identity
Example 5m – 2(m+ 2) = -(2m + 15) 5m – 2m - 4 = -2m – 15
Solve Each Equation Using a Graphing Calculator
