Multicultural Literature Vocabulary Unit 1 Perception is Everything

CULTURE A PEOPLE’S WAY OF BEING, KNOWING, AND DOING. A SOCIAL GROUP’S CUSTOMS, ARTS, OR SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS

Globalization the process by which businesses or other organizations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale

NATIONALISM The policy of asserting the interests one’s own nation over those of other nations or the common interests of all nations.

INDIVIDUALISM Social theory advocating the rights, liberty and independent action of the individual. The pursuit of individual rather than collective interest or benefits

COLLECTIVISM Social, economic or political philosophy that emphasizes the significance of groups (identities, goals, rights) over those of the individual.

MULTICULTURALISM The presence, or support, of several distinct ethnic or cultural groups within a society
