RES Chapter 10-12

Chapter 10/ Garbage on fire Evelyn noticed that the streets has gotten wider. College student sweepers were pushing bags of junk towards the middle of the avenue. Evelyn spots don Juan, Wilfredo, and Abuela sweeping garbage. Evelyn wanted to help clean up the streets. Evelyn’s mom does not want her to be near their “gang”, which ends up with an argument with Abuela. Awilda, Migdalia, and Dora show up. (Everyone except Migdalia joins the sweeping.

Cont’d Wilfredo’s pet name for Migdalia was Miggy. Abuela rallied everyone together and they all began to push the garbage to 3rd Avenue. Some people supported the act and some people honked their horn in disgust. Evelyn smelled something funny and discovered that they were lighting the garbage on fire, The Fire Department and the Police came. No one was scared and no one ran away.

Cont’d The youngsters (Aka the Young Lords) burned up the trash to call attention to the fact that the waste in their neighborhood was not picked up as often as the other neighborhood’s waste was picked up.

Chapter 11/ Who is a young lord? The NY Times article introduced the Young Lords. Evelyn asked her grandmother if she was a Young Lord. The Young Lord’s we’re aiming to unite Spanish-speaking Americans to end the oppression against them. Abuela shows Evelyn pictures of violence such as shooting. Ex: Abuela showed Evelyn a photo of a policeman squatting over a dead body. Abuela tells Evelyn that one of the shooters was Evelyn’s grandfather.. Evelyn’s mother comes in and ends the conversation. Evelyn now has a secret to keep.

Chapter 12/The faceless killer Abuela talks about how she and Evelyn’s grandfather met. Evelyn’s grandfather came from a wealthy family. Evelyn learns from Abuela that Abuela tried to stay away from her grandfather because she didn’t love him. Abuela then talks about the Nationalists in Puerto Rico. She tells Evelyn that a “revolution” she could not “control” with her heart. When Abuela shows a photo of the massacre, Mami disagrees and says it isn’t true. This soon results into conflict between Mami and Abuela. Mami knows that the man in the photo was not Evelyn’s grandfather. Later on, Evelyn dreams about a police man shooting people that doesn’t have a face.
