Presentation transcript:

Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation The Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization established in 1965 following the devastating floods in the town of Klamath. We fulfill our mission by providing grant funding, scholarships & leadership training and through our innovative Pediatric Trauma Program District Convention 2017 Margo Dutton, Foundation President Jennifer Chaves, Executive Director

Pediatric Trauma Program Ensuring all children live happy, healthy and safe lives. To develop local projects, which will reduce the number of children in our District who are killed or injured by trauma. Recognizing the serious need for education and training in the areas of pediatric trauma and injury prevention, the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation established the Pediatric Trauma Program in 1994. The mission of our PTP program is simple: Develop local projects, which will reduce the number of children in our District who are killed or injured by trauma. Notice I used the word “trauma” not “accident” – we’ll get back to this in a minute.

9,000 225,000 9,000,000 Number of children who die annually Number of children hospitalized annually 9,000,000 So why Pediatric Trauma? Out of all of the worthy programs available, why would the Foundation select Pediatric Trauma as its major focus? Well . . . Unintentional injury remains the #1 killer of children age 14 and under in the U.S. Each year in the U.S., 9,000 families lose a child because of a preventable injury 225K are hospitalized for their injuries and nearly 9M are treated in EDs But I believe the reason the Foundation selected PTP as our major focus is because 90% of these injuries could be prevented through education, awareness and enforcement of laws and regulations. Number of children treated in EDs annually

Enhancing and furthering the efforts of our clubs Grantmaking Enhancing and furthering the efforts of our clubs For new service projects which seek to prevent and/or treat pediatric trauma – defined as sudden, unintentional physical injury. Each year, the Foundation awards thousands of dollars in grant funds to the clubs and divisions within our District. Grants awarded to our Kiwanis family reach hundreds of children and families each year, helping to provide outreach, education and safety equipment. The result is stronger families, safer communities and educated & informed parents, all of which help us create a better future for our children.

PTP Grants for SLP Did you know the Foundation offers grant funding to SLP clubs for service projects which seek to prevent and/or treat pediatric trauma - defined as sudden, unintentional physical injury? Established to assist SLP clubs in financing PTP service projects on a start up basis Must be a new serviced project Must prevent and/or treat pediatric trauma Up to $500 per project Note: If you have a large-scale project which exceeds $500; consider partnering with your sponsoring Kiwanis club and ask them to apply for a Kiwanis PTP club grant (matching up to $2k) or multi-club grant (matching up to $5k) Examples: helmet fitting; hospital dolls, blankets, rice warmers; farmer’s market; community event; school event
