William Shakespeare's Life Greatest writer in the English language Greatest play writer of all time Few known facts about Shakespeare’s life Renaissance period: renewed interest in Science, philosophy, and the arts A new way of life: focus on the individual and freedom of choice The Renaissance was a cultural movement that spanned the period roughly from the 14th to the 17th century. The Elizabethan era was in the 16th century. The Elizabethan era was in the Renaissance era and some would regard the Elizabethan era as the height of the Renaissance era.

William Shakespeare's Life Shakespeare was baptized on April 26, 1564 Stratford-on-Avon: a small town about 90 miles northwest of London We can guess that Shakespeare was born on April 23rd because it was custom to be baptized 3 days after your birth. Look at the boarder of Stratford- on- Avon. What does this look like? A heart? This is ironic because this the where you can say the heart of the English language was born.

William Shakespeare’s Life Shakespeare lived on Henley Street. Father was a glove maker and town’s mayor Mother was a distant relative of a wealthy family This is believed to be the birthplace of Shakespeare which it is now a small museum open to the public and a popular visitor attraction,

William Shakespeare’s life At 18, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, a local farmer’s daughter At the time of marriage Anne was three months pregnant with their first daughter Susanna Two years later, they had twins Hamnet and Judith Hamnet dies at the age of 11 Hamnet died of unknown causes at the age of 11 and was buried 11 August 1596 but some believe that he may have been infected with the black plague.

Elizabethan Age Rich and poor alike were defenseless against the bubonic plague In 1564, the year Shakespeare was born, nearly one- third of his hometown died of the plague (lost many siblings to plague)

The Globe Theater

The Globe In 1599, Shakespeare became a joint owner of the Globe The Globe was a three-story wooden structure with an open roof 3,000 spectators of all classes Lower class in the pit and the upper class in the balconies

The most expensive seats were directly behind the stage, called the gallery. Though the people sitting there could only see the actors from behind, they themselves could be seen by everyone in the audience.
