Greek Geography Greece was NOT a unified empire. Each city (known as a city state) was independent. Mountainous terrain helped and hindered the development of individual city states.

Ancient Greece A little background… Economy based on farming (agriculture) Trade important as was the spread of the Greek culture Shift from barter (trade) economy to money economy (coins) Depended on trade to access resources not naturally found in Greece. Depended on colonizing other places to deal with overpopulation and the search for land suitable for farming.
