The Jolly Christmas Postman Year 1 - Autumn Term 2

This half term Year 1 will be reading the Jolly Christmas Postman This half term Year 1 will be reading the Jolly Christmas Postman. We will be learning about maps and how to follow routes. We will be using our sorting skills to run the Jolly Post Office and deliver Christmas cards around school.

Talking about the Christmas story and helping them to retell it. We will be learning about having to wait for something and what we do while we wait. We will look at Advent as a time of waiting. We will learn about Advent wreaths and what they mean. We will talk about Mary and how she waited for the birth of Jesus. We will listen to the story of Elizabeth We will learn about the birth of Jesus. We will join with other year groups to make Christingles. Talking about the Christmas story and helping them to retell it.

Speaking and Listening Writing We will be looking at our address. We will be writing and sending a letter to Father Christmas. We will be writing instructions for other classes, explaining how to use the Jolly Post Service. We will be writing lists and captions for the Jolly Post Office. Speaking and Listening We will be thinking about and using words and phrases associated with the Post Office. We will be learning our song words for the Nativity. Reading and Phonics We will be continuing with ReadWriteInc. We will be reading The Jolly Christmas Postman, by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. Looking at and reading signs in the Post Office. Looking at letters and their address.

We will be sorting shapes. We will be weighing parcels. Topic Maths We will be sorting shapes. We will be weighing parcels. We will be doing stamp investigations. Maths - Number We will be developing our knowledge of odd and even numbers. We will be doing more addition and subtraction. Counting up to 100 from any number. We will be working with our number bonds to 20. Shape, Space and Measures We will be looking at 2D and 3D shapes, describing them and talking about their properties. Practice counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s. Reading and recognising numbers to 100.

We will be using ‘Paint’ to create Winter images. Computing We will be using ‘Paint’ to create Winter images. We will be using ‘Publisher’ to create a Christmas card. Science We will be looking at the season of Autumn as it turns into Winter. We will be looking at how some animals migrate or hibernate. We will consider appropriate clothing for the season. Talking about the changing season and identify what they can see and hear around them.

DT We will be investigating different materials and their appropriateness to be a Postman’s delivery bag. We will be designing warm winter outfits for the Jolly Postman to wear. Geography We will be looking at maps, starting with a bird’s eye view of the classroom. We will use a map of the school to locate places and create a key. We will create a map of the Jolly Postman’s journey. We will use maps to find our way round school. Art We will be making Christmas decorations and seasonal calendars. Talk about where they live and their journey to school.

We will be learning and practicing our songs for the Nativity. PE Music We will be learning and practicing our songs for the Nativity. PE We will be developing our fundamental movement skills. Helping them to learn and practice their songs.
