Managing Your Scholarly Presence Online Profiling systems like ResearchGate, LinkedIn, Academia.edu, Selected Works Claiming your work Google Scholar ORCiD

Who am I? Dylan Burns, Digital Scholarship Librarian Library’s expert on Scholarly Communication and Open Access Subject Librarian for Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies

The Online Self “The construction of online identities or persona is now an essential activity for the academic both from the perspective of university value and individual/career value” Just as our resources and social lives have gone online, so too have our academic selves. Our academic selves increasingly come on display through our departmental websites, through social media, and online scholarly profiles. With so many options how do we choose? Kim Barbour and David Marshall “The Academic Online: Constructing Persona Through the World Wide Web” First Monday. 2012

The Online Self Just as our resources and social lives have gone online, so too have our academic selves. Our academic selves increasingly come on display through our departmental websites, through social media, and online scholarly profiles. With so many options how do we choose?

ResearchGate Popular in the sciences, with over 12 million scholars currently signed up Boasts100 million items uploaded (many of which have been posted illegally) Under pressure from publishers and professional organizations over the legality of sharing PDFs

Academia.edu More popular in the Humanities, same issues as ResearchGate Switched to a premium model in the Spring 2017 leading to a large exodus of scholars from the service Search functions and metrics no longer work without paying

Selected Works Connected with DigitalCommons@USU Association with Utah State University, but completely personalized and stays in your control if you move on to another institution Everything is vetted for copyright prior to upload Free service provided by the Library

Considerations Stability/Profit/Non-Profit Indexability and reports Copyright Ownership of materials

Stability and Profits Is the platform going to be around for a long time? Is ownership of the platform going to change hands? Is this organization selling my info to the highest bidder?

Index and Reports Can you get reports of how many people are reading your things?

Identifiers and the real you.

Identifiers and the real you. Not Me

Google Scholar Google Scholar is the premier search engine for the discovery of academic articles It also provides metrics such as number of citations, h-index, and i10-index to show your impact for promotion and tenure You will need to create a ”profile” and claim your work

ORCiDs ORCiD IDs are unique identifiers that allow you to claim your research as your own Many publications are requiring ORCiD IDs in order to publish with them
