Assessment Coordinators Meeting September 18, 2018 Seth Anthony, Interim Director, Office of Academic Excellence Janette Isaacson, Chair, Executive Committee of the Assessment Commission Nellie Stewart, Executive Assistant, Office of Academic Excellence

Goals for Today (1) Make sure you as program assessment coordinators have the information you need to lead assessment activity in your departments (particularly fall term). (2) Thank you for your help and participating both in the review of reports, developing our own assessment guide and in giving input to transition to Portfolium. Distinct Experience--Sandra There is a lot of pressure for institutions of higher education to create an educational experience that is nice, convenient and possibly even easy. A distinct experience is memorable and personal. This is the experience which will create graduates. Nice, convenient and easy is viewed as “Time well saved” Memorable and personal experiences are viewed as “Time well spent” Time well saved equals--time watching the clock; box checking; jumping through hoops; accumulating credits Time well spent equals—engaged students, engaged faculty, engaged alums

Three Major Responsibilities (1) Program Assessment Program Assessment Reports – Due October 31. (2) ESLO Assessment ESLO Assessment Courses Identified – Due October 31. (3) Student Exit Survey Updates Changes to Program Questions – Due October 31. All this goes to our MVP: nellie.stewart@oit.edu Distinct Experience--Sandra There is a lot of pressure for institutions of higher education to create an educational experience that is nice, convenient and possibly even easy. A distinct experience is memorable and personal. This is the experience which will create graduates. Program Assessment Reports Due Oct. 31 Software: LiveText contract is terminated (but we still have all of our data), and we have signed with Portfolium. Portfolium is a highly flexible tool (and supports ePortfolios, too!) We will not dictate or demand use. Invites going out to all faculty on Thursday. Rolling this out 1:1 on meetings with assessment coordinators. (We’ll meet with every one of you 1:1 over the year.) Distinct Experience--Sandra There is a lot of pressure for institutions of higher education to create an educational experience that is nice, convenient and possibly even easy. Program Assessment Reports Due Oct. 31 New program assessment report guide and rubric. (This responds to both a NWCCU critique of OIT and new accreditation standards). Distinct Experience--Sandra There is a lot of pressure for institutions of higher education to create an educational experience that is nice, convenient and possibly even easy. A distinct experience is memorable and personal. This is the experience which will create graduates. Program Assessment Reports Due Oct. 31 New program assessment report guide and rubric Program assessment guide is aspirational; don’t be scared – it’s all about continuous improvement. Guide focuses effort towards reflecting and acting on data. We hope for lots of feedback (and things we can steal). This year, consider: return to your previous document templates, and we’ll continue to provide feedback with annual review of reports (winter term).

Ideas for improvement in program assessment Based on ratings of 2016-2017 reports, consider: - Collaboration on rating/scoring student work. (bring multiple faculty together for discussion – better to collaboratively discuss fewer artifacts than separately rate a lot). - Specificity on improvement actions: Be specific about courses, individuals, dates (Improvements can be about courses/curriculum or about assessment processes.) Distinct Experience--Sandra There is a lot of pressure for institutions of higher education to create an educational experience that is nice, convenient and possibly even easy. ESLO Assessment: Identify courses by Oct. 31 “Collect” Year for Ethical Reasoning: Each bachelor’s degree program identifies a course for ESLO assessment by October 31. Identify either a foundational (first-year) or practicing (~junior year) course where ethical reasoning is exhibited. (Assignment where as much of the rubric applies as you can find; don’t worry if it’s not all there – this is data collection) Ethical Reasoning ESLO Committee – Franny Howes, chair (Yasha Rohwer, Travis Lund, Mike Pierce) Distinct Experience--Sandra There is a lot of pressure for institutions of higher education to create an educational experience that is nice, convenient and possibly even easy. ESLO Assessment: Identify courses by Oct. 31 We will not ask faculty to score in isolation. Ask faculty to upload artifacts to Portfolium as soon as they are available. We will bring faculty together during Assessment Days throughout the year (end of terms, including 1 “hosted” in Portland-Metro). Each program: please contribute 2-3 hours of faculty time to these sessions. (Professional development opportunity!) STUDENT EXIT SURVEY 2017-18 Distribution: - Receive email from Office of Academic Excellence to confirm Programmatic Questions (response due by October 31. - Program Questions will immediately follow the first two questions on ESLOs. - Week 6 of every term (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer) Office of Academic Excellence will distribute Student Exit Survey. FAST Report pulls students that have submitted a Petition to Graduate with the Registrar’s Office for selected term. STUDENT EXIT SURVEY This year: Assessment Exec will have broader conversations about the Student Exit Survey: - Is it the right way/time to task? - Is data getting used? Are we collecting data redundantly? - Does it have the right flexibility for programs? Lots of users, lots of data. Fundamentals won’t change for this year. We will likely come to you to ask about your exit survey needs, preferences, constraints.
