Beach Ball of Life! Everyone will stand in a circle. When the beach ball is tossed to you, read the FIRST question you see. Answer the question honestly and appropriately – remember this is helping us get to know you (include your name!) No shopping for questions

Why study history?

Links to TOK: Why study history? A common misconception about history is that it’s simply the memorization of names, dates, and events…….. But it’s so much more! What do YOU think? Why do we study history? What can be learned about the study of the past? Why is this study important in today’s world? All of these questions will be answered with a TOK discussion activity…. Follow directions – do NOT move ahead!

Discussion POINTS…. Historian: Role, methods & context Historical objectivity vs. subjectivity Why do accounts of the same historical event differ? How can history help us understand the present? What makes a source biased? Can a biased source be valuable? Why or why not? Ex: autobiography???

Writing Assignment: Personal History Today, you will begin a writing pre-assessment on your personal history. Think of this as an autobiography…..what might you include? Due MONDAY  20 points! Needs to be at least one page & include important aspects of autobiographical history I will use this as a pre-assessment for your writing skills, level and style.

What do YOU think? Not only are these traits important to you as students, they’re important in our study of history! You and a group are now going to be assigned one IB learner trait and will be challenged to find a connection to a specific event/person in history. Be ready to discuss and explain your reasoning! How do they relate to one another? Why is that trait important to our study of history? For example, Gandhi was principled on his quest to gain Indian independence from the British empire. He acted with true integrity and honesty in order to preserve the values of the majority Indian-Hindu population. He was also willing to accept any consequences on his fight for fairness, justice, and respect.
