Many people bought their first vehicle during the 1920’s Many people bought their first vehicle during the 1920’s. This was a time when people had extra money to spend on things they didn’t need.

People had free time to enjoy instead of working all the time People had free time to enjoy instead of working all the time. Pictured here are people enjoying their time at a beach.

The Great Depression was very difficult for many families during the 1930’s.

Many people were out of work Many people were out of work. Men would wait in long lines for the chance to receive some food for themselves in soup kitchens.

Many people protested how the government would not help them Many people protested how the government would not help them. People wanted the government to create real jobs, not just receive food.

Many men would leave their families looking for work Many men would leave their families looking for work. They would jump onto railcars crossing the country. However, there was no work anywhere. In some places they were arrested and put in jail for not having a job.

In the Canadian prairies, a drought made the Depression worse In the Canadian prairies, a drought made the Depression worse. Years without rain turned the soil into dust that buried farms and made living very difficult.

The Depression ended in Canada when war was declared on Germany in 1939. Unemployed men were able to join the army. Factories were opened to build guns, ships and airplanes for the war.
