Relationships in the Early 1700s English-French-First Nations Question: What is an alliance? Alliance – a type of agreement between people or groups to achieve a common goal

The Wabanaki Confederacy (a group of five First Nations groups) who lived mostly around Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI and some of Quebec had an alliance with the French to fight against the British. The British wanted to end this alliance. Why? They wanted to control more land!

In July 1713 the British and the Wabanaki Confederacy came together on the eastern coast of North America. The British agreed to…. Not build on Wabanaki land any further To conduct trade at a neutral location To exchange gifts as part of Wabanaki tradition The Wabanaki Confederacy agreed to … Stop attacks on the British Give back settlement and lands taken from the British Allow any future disputes to be decided on by the British government CONCLUSION – British promised to stop invading First Nation territories and the Wabanaki promised to stop attacking the British! This was called the Treaty of Portsmouth.

The treaty was written in English & read aloud in English (Wabanaki Confederacy used interpreters). To the right is the treaty with signatures of the British and Wabanaki. What misunderstandings or issues could their be with this only being written in English? With a partner write down three concerns. Don’t understand it, don’t understand what they’re agreeing to, pressured into it, not fair

Shortly after the treaty was signed, the British started to break the agreements by building settlements on the Native land. The treaty didn’t work! #

If you were a French leader what might you do now If you were a French leader what might you do now? Would you help the Natives in their fight against the British? Why? If so, HOW would you help? Write a short diary entry as a French person living at this time. Describe your plan going forward to help (or not help) the Natives. Explain WHY!

In the end……. The French did end up helping the Natives In the end…….. The French did end up helping the Natives. They gave them guns and horses to start a revolution against the British. This lead to bloodshed and uprisings. Did the treaties work?
