5/17/2018 Welcome & Objectives Identify strategies to improve part-time lecturer, non-tenure track faculty, and new faculty engagement and learning. Discuss examples and best practices that broaden participation of new faculty and part-time lecturers. Evaluate your institutional approach to engaging new faculty and part-time lecturer onboarding and identify gaps and roadblocks preventing their participation.

OUR JOURNEY FIRST STEPS Branch campus 5/17/2018 OUR JOURNEY Branch campus Absence of faculty support structure Performed annual faculty orientation, very low attendance No formalized faculty development offering FIRST STEPS Creation of the Academic and Faculty Support Center (2015) Implementation of small Faculty Steering Committee Improved Faculty Development Offerings Organization and Effort toward Faculty Development offerings tailored to non-tenured track faculty More space for text option

Take A Moment: Who are the target faculty audience? 5/17/2018 Who are the target faculty audience? What are their motivations? What are the differences in demands by traditional tenure-track faculty, non-tenure track faculty, part-time faculty, academic staff, etc.? What are the challenges and barriers to engaging multiple faculty types? Take A Moment:

OUR LEARNING EXPERIENCE: 5/17/2018 OUR LEARNING EXPERIENCE: RESEARCH Balancing workforce focused programs and teaching faculty within a research-focused university. RECOGNITION Moving toward a more inclusive “all faculty” climate and culture. ONBOARDING Addressing the gap in onboarding for part-time lecturers in need of basic classroom skills and resources. ACCESS Recognizing and offering access to meet the needs of part-time faculty.

New Faculty Orientation 5/17/2018 What We Offer New Faculty Orientation Moved to an evening session with light dinner that will allow access to most of whom we attract as faculty. Developed a comprehensive faculty handbook to highlight necessary policy, how to access resources, and example canned syllabus language. Embed Faculty Development into orientation to cover classroom management, new technologies, and pedagogy.

Faculty Development What We Offer 5/17/2018 What We Offer Faculty Development Lunch & Learn sessions with light snacks. This is an effective time to reach resident faculty. Added distance connections to increase access to those who can participate remotely. Relevant content developed from faculty feedback with primary focus on needs and interest of teaching faculty. Topics include everything from LMS tools, instructional strategies, alternative course delivery, and emerging trends in Higher Ed. Building academic community amongst faculty through annual Faculty Convocation.

Faculty Growth & Succession Training 5/17/2018 What We Offer Faculty Growth & Succession Training Creation and Implementation of an Academic Program Leader Academy. We focus on developing leadership, administrative, and supervisory skills. Addresses the challenges of managing an academic program from a distance, with governance residing on the main campus. To provide community and development opportunities for “lone wolf” faculty. Build the next group of administrative leaders for the campus.

Evaluation and Assessment 5/17/2018 What We Offer Evaluation and Assessment Survey and Assess every offering provided by our department to seek quality feedback from those we’re seeking to engage. What better method to determine if we’re providing the content that is needed and in the format most desired?

Evaluate you own situation 5/17/2018 Evaluate you own situation
