ARCC - Objective Initiated by AB 1417 and passed in 2004 To provide accountability To evaluate college performance on the state’s educational priorities To provide colleges and districts with information to help improve their programs

Process

ARCC Reports the Performance of Seven Indicators*: Student Progress and Achievement Rate Students Who Earned at Least 30 Units Fall to Fall Persistence Rate Completion Rate for Vocational Course Completion Rate for Basic Skills Course Improvement Rate for ESL Improvement Rate for Basic Skills *An eighth indicator will be added next year-‘Enhanced Noncredit Progress and Achievement Rate’

Student Progress and Achievement rate has declined slightly over time. 1. Strategies for Improvement Examine the consistency and flexibility of course offerings to ensure students can graduate in a timely fashion. Increase support for academic services such as the tutoring centers, learning centers, math labs, writing labs, Supplemental Instruction, etc. Strengthen partnerships with high schools to ensure students are prepared to meet higher academic standards. Increase participation in academic intervention activities such as early alert. Instructions will notify students if they are in academic difficulty no later than the 8 week of classes. Contact students who have completed 15 units and still have an undeclared major to make appointments with counselors

Persistence Rate % 1st time students with a minimum of 6 units earned in a Fall term and who returned and enrolled in the subsequent Fall term anywhere in the system Chart T 1.2 The persistence rate for most recent period has increased 3.5 percentage points. Strategies for Improvement Expand support and development of learning communities and support programs such as Puente Strengthen ongoing communications between Instructional services and student services Devise method of referring students to campus resources, tracking the referral and follow-up (did the student participate in the recommended referral?). Strategies for Improvement A Career Education counselor has been hired through categorical funds (Perkins) to assist in referring students for academic support. Continue informing High School personnel about academic requirements necessary for students entering Career Education programs. Career Education Counselor will work closely within the Counseling Department in providing information about Career Programs to better support student placement.

Annual Successful Course Completion Rate for Credit Basic Skills Courses % of students enrolled in a credit basic skills English or math course who successfully completed that initial course, excluding students enrolled in k-12 when they took their first course Chart T 1.4 Approximately 57% of MSJC students that enrolled in a credit Basic Skill English or math course successfully complete that initial course. Strategies for Improvement Hired (07-08) New full time ESL instructor Developing curricular frameworks that define what should be taught, and how it should be taught, to students with different needs Increased professional development for ESL instructors Establishing ESL lab at SJC LRC Continue to recruit English language learners throughout the district and educate them about the opportunities at MSJC. Continue to educate English learners throughout the district about the opportunities at MSJC. Recruit high school students in English learner programs and prepare them for the matriculation process.
