Steps for writing an in-class essay Prepare & Study (MHG p. 609 “Getting Ready;” pp. 613-614 “Dealing with the Examination Scene”; CORE READINGS) Read the Question (MHG pp. 609-612 “Considering Questions” & “Analyzing Questions”) Conceive the Claim/Answer (MHG pp. 612-613 “Constructing Thoughtful Answers) Outline the essay (MHG pp. 612-613 “Constructing Thoughtful Answers; pp. 445-447 “Using Outlines” Write (MHG pp. 614-616 for an example) Review & Correct Turn it in

In-Class essay: 5 Paragraph Format Paragraph 1: Very Brief intro –mostly just the thesis your claim (the answer to the question) reasons/supporting points for the claim (at least 2, but usually 3) Paragraph 2: Develop reason/supporting point 1 Topic Sentence introducing 1st reason One or more pieces of evidence from readings or lecture notes Reasoning for each piece of evidence, making the connection to supporting point and to thesis.
