Parent Workshop 22nd September 2017

What we will cover What is RWI phonics? Lesson structure How does it work? Year 1 phonics screening How do we group children? How can I help?

What is Read Write Inc Phonics? A rapid Learn to read programme which covers reading, writing and spelling across Reception and Year 1. Children in Reception and Year 1 received a daily 45 minute session. Reception start with 20 minute sessions for the first half term.

Lesson structure 1. New sound 2. Word time 3. Storybook 4. Writing Saying, reading, writing new sound Reading, making, writing words Green words Red words Intro Partner reading Hold a sentence (1st 4-6 weeks Reception) 12/29/2018

shop Sounds All words are made up of sounds (phonemes) In English there are 44 different sounds There are more than 150 different ways to represent these sound. These are called graphemes shop

Graphemes

Set 1 and Set 2 sounds Children learn a simple code first

Set 3 sounds Set 3 sounds – different ways to spell – link to complex chart next slide. Explain split digraphs

Set 3 alternative ways of spelling

p o p Fred... Blending is needed for reading Fred helps children learn to read Fred can only talk in sounds... (Fred can only say c_a_t, he can’t say cat) We call this Fred Talk If children understand Fred they can blend orally Blending is needed for reading p o p 12/29/2018

Fred... Fred helps children learn to spell as well! Children convert words into sounds They press the sounds they hear on to their fingers... We call this Fred Fingers ‘Sound it out’ before writing 12/29/2018

Red words Red words – words that cannot be sounded out e.g. I, said, they The children don’t learn the complex code for these words

Storybooks 12/29/2018

Storybooks Children: Talk a lot about what they have read to show they understand Listen to and discuss other ideas to deepen understanding (lots of partner talking!) This is comprehending Explain that Speaking & Listening elements of literacy are built in to RWI from the very beginning through lots of talking and partner work.

So how can you help your child? By knowing the 44 pure sounds By reading books that the children take home By knowing how to blend using Fred Talk for reading m_a_t By helping your child to use Fred Fingers for spelling

Grouping children Every 6 weeks Children do a quick assessment with an adult Children may or may not have a different teacher Small groups Content may change instead of teacher/group

Year 1 phonics screening check Children don’t have to do anything extra it’s covered in RWI phonics Year 1 in June Alien and real words Children don’t do anything extra – all covered in RWI

And... By having fun with Fred Talk at home! “What a tidy r-oo-m!” “Where’s your c-oa-t?” “Time for b-e-d!” back, head, tum, leg, hand, foot, knee coat, hat, scarf, zip, sock, glove run, walk, skip, hop, fast, slow, stop, shop red, blue, green, black, knife, fork, spoon, plate, bowl, pan bread, cheese, meat, soup, jam, cake

And... By reading to your child lots of lovely stories and asking lots of questions! Use these prompts to help you: What is that character thinking? What do you think happens next? What is happening? What is the character saying? What do you think that character is feeling now?

Thank you... Happy reading!
