Activity 2.1: Previewing the unit 7th Grade Springboard

Learning targets I can preview the big ideas and vocabulary for the unit. I can identify and analyze the skills and knowledge needed to complete the Embedded Assessment 1 successfully.

Making connections You see some form of advertising around you every day. What catches your attention? Is it television? Internet ads? Print ads? Radio? Advertising influences the choices that you make. You might also be influenced by other things, such as what people are saying on social media or what people are wearing or doing on television. In this unit, you will examine various types of media and the techniques they use to convince you to buy their products.

Essential questions Based on your current knowledge, how would you answer these questions? Think-Pair-Share What role does advertising play in the lives of youth? What makes an effective argument?

Developing vocabulary Mark the academic vocabulary and literary terms from page 86 on the QHT strategy handout. Q= I have a question about the word. H= I have heard of the word. T= I know it and can teach it to others. Write down the definition from the back of the book. Draw a symbol that is related to the definition and will help you remember and understand the meaning.

Unpacking EA 1 Your writing assignment is to write an expository essay that explains the role of advertising in the lives of youth and then exchange ideas in a collaborative discussion. For your essay, you may use as sources the articles in this unit and at least one additional informational text that you researched.
