Photosynthesis and Respiration The Basics. How do organisms obtain energy? Plants get their energy from the sun! Plants are called autotrophs Auto = Self.
Why do you need energy? Many chemical rxns are happening in your body without you even knowing it. – Macromolecules are broken down or assembled – Molecules.

Primary Productivity Lab

Lab Agenda 9/15 1. Mass pill bugs and potato - Place in cup with cover in dark cool place, label cups with group names - Mass wet potato and then place in dehydrator 2. Mass wet plants and separate on paper towel labeled. 3. Dehydrate wet plants 4. Determine what data you will collect and what calculations you can do. 5. Animal Behavior Case Study

What is primary productivity?

Primary Productivity Amount of light energy converted into chemical energy MINUS the amount of energy used by the producers for respiration. Describe how would we measure this in our mung bean plants?

What is the equation for photosynthesis and cellular respiration?

Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

Why do we need to determine the dried biomass of the plant

What calculations will need to be done? We want to calculate the primary productivity of the mung bean plant.

What numbers do I need to do those calculations? Energy in a mung bean seed: 4500 Cal/13 g Energy in mung bean tissue: 4350 Cal/ g
