#2 Chapter 1 Section 3 Early British Colonies OBJECTIVE: Learn how the British came to America and founded their colonies.

The English Settle at Jamestown In 1607, the English, led by John Smith, established Jamestown, a colony in Virginia. Colonists wanted to get rich quick, suffer from disease and famine. No farming

Colonists develop tobacco; profitable but requires a supply of labor. Leads to indentured servants: lower-class English. Colonists want more land which leads to conflict with Native Americans… Colonists Win Economic differences split wealthy Virginia colonists and the poor former indentured servants. Bacon’s Rebellion

Puritans Create a “New England” Puritans want to rid Church of England of Catholic rituals. Puritans, led by John Winthrop, found a colony in Massachusetts Bay. Want a moral society. Puritans create a strict society dominated by religious vows.

Puritan Dissenters: Roger Williams- Believed that England should buy the land from Native Americans and that people should have the right to worship in their own way. Anne Hutchinson- Believed there was no need for the Church to interpret the Bible. Both of them flee to Providence, Rhode Island; promote religious freedom.

Disputes between Native Americans and Puritans over land & religion. Puritans take Native American’s land. Puritans attempt to convert and change Native Americans. Why???

Settlement of the Middle Colonies The Quakers, led by William Penn, settle Pennsylvania. The Quakers (Society of Friends) are Pacifist Protestants who: Worship without formal ministers; everyone can speak. Oppose war & slavery. Believe in equality, cooperation, and religious tolerance. These would become fundamental values of the new American nation.
