Background Gaius Caesar (Caligula) Born in 12 A.D Died in 41 A.D

Background (continue) Grew up around the military, because his father was a miltiary leader When Caligula was young his father had died from a suspicious poisoning. Due to his fathers death, his mother took action by acting as the father and mother of the house, which caused her to be very powerful and strict. Therefore, he was raised to be very tough and powerful.

The rise to power When Caligula first came to power he was strongly admired. People created statues to show how they praised him as a leader. After the death of Tiberius he became the Emperor of the Roman Empire.

Strengths He formed a strong army because of his strict ruling. He helped the army become stronger because of his mother and father. He freed citizens that were unfairly imprisoned by Tiberius. He helped poor people pay taxes. He eliminated unpopular taxes. He used his money on building projects, religious temples and theaters.

Weaknesses He forced parents to watch the executions of their children. He eliminated his political rivals. He drained the Roman treasury. He rolled around in piles of money and drank precious pearls dissolved in vinegar. He was obsessed with his horse, which caused him to be isolated from the Roman people. Caligula argued with the senators, and executed them as well. He wanted to invade Britain, but his plan never was completed due to his lack of bravery. Caligula disliked the people of Jewish religion.

Effect on the Roman Empire Caligula had a negative effect on the Roman Empire. He hurt the economy and the government by using all of the money that he was given on himself. It turned out that Caligula was a crazy man who lead the Roman Empire to a downfall. With Caligula’s crazy mind, the Roman Empire had no leader.

Downfall and death The citizens of Rome started to hate him. They created a secret plan to get rid of him. He was attacked by a group of guardsmen from the Praetorian Guard. Caligula was stabbed to death 30 times, just like Julius Caesar. After his death the citizens destroyed all of his statues that were in Rome.

Family relationships Along with the murder of Caligula, his wife and daughter were murdered as well. Caligula wasn’t very loyal to his wife, because he had affairs with allies wives. Rummored to have an improper relationship with his sisters.
