How heat travels from one place to another… Heat Transfer How heat travels from one place to another…

(enrich) What happens to solar energy that reaches Earth (enrich) What happens to solar energy that reaches Earth? **only about two-billionths of the sun’s energy actually reaches Earth!!!

3 forms of heat transfer: (radiation, conduction, convection*)

RADIATION (space) *heat energy from the sun travels in electromagnetic (EM) waves *ex: heating your hands in front of a fire*

CONDUCTION (touch) *transfer of heat through contact/touching a material *warm to cold *heats air near Earth’s surface *ex: metal spoon gets hot if left in pot of sauce*

CONVECTION (due to density) transfer of heat by circulation/movement of liquid or gas main way heat is moved around in the atmosphere convection currents created by warm air rising (less dense) and cool air sinking (denser)

Summary of 3 methods of heat transfer
