Reading Paper discussion by Hare w Understanding ‘Change’ and ‘Innovation’

Agenda What is innovation ? What was interesting in the paper ? The shift in learning Why do we seek changes and how is it connected with innovation ? Key takeaways from the paper

What was interesting ? When to use the term innovation ? Three criteria outlined by Pratte Change which we value to some extent) of some significance a purposeful Innovation sometimes expresses disapproval Caveat – Regressive change is not innovation

From textbook to tablet Content at various places Content all in one place Traditional Progressive way Of great significance

Reasons for change When do we seek change ? Break the monotony of some activity or life-style Not just any change which will be welcomed, for we will often prefer to continue to be bored than to be affected in some new and undesirable way. (2) seen as a principle of desperation - because change may or may not improve the condition of one’s life – state of affairs might be worse, or that we have failed to notice, or have forgotten, the valuable features of the present state. Change is to be considered in subordination to other principles governing educational decisions. Does it serve to promote valuable learning? Does it endanger the central task of an educational institution?

Key takeaways Dispute in innovation Not all changes can be termed as innovations (MOOCS are good, however.. All changes cannot be termed as innovation, there is the dispute as to whether or not the change is of value, How to question change and see if there an addition in value : empirical data; Ask analytic questions; Is there a common consensus

Question to think Refer to slide 5 and think which reason would be more suited in the case of education ? Schools shifting emphasis to test scores would you consider it change ?
