Energy Consumption at Home

Units of Energy Watt – unit of power Kilowatt is equal to 1000W Light bulbs measured in W Kilowatt is equal to 1000W Kilowatt hour (kWh) – 1000W used in one hour

Conservation of Energy Incandescent – 95% of energy in is given off as heat Compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) – are more energy efficient and last longer Light emitting diode (LED) – are even more efficient and last the longest Cost the most

Electrical Safety Handle electronics carefully Some electronics retain charge even after they are unplugged

ENERGY STAR and Energuide is a voluntary partnership between the Government of Canada and industry to promote energy efficiency. Meets a code. Energuide – is the official mark of the Government of Canada for its energy performance rating and labeling program for key consumer items. Rating.

ENERGY STAR and Energuide

Electricity Usage Cost Every time you plug in an appliance or turn on a switch, electricity is being used. Smart meters send usage of electricity on a house by house basis

Electrical Energy Consumption Amount of energy used is calculated in kilowatt-hour (kW●h) If a microwave is 0.8 kW and the oven is turned on for half an hour E = 0.8 kW x 0.5h = 0.4 kW●h To calculate cost you multiply the energy consumed (kW●h) at the cost per hour (which can vary depending on time of day). There are additional charges as well like delivery costs and taxes.
