Differences of the architectural styles. By: Logan Fields Cape Cod Vs. Federal Differences of the architectural styles. By: Logan Fields

Cape Cod History Cape Cod homes began in as early as the 1600s and are still around to this day. A large number of this style of house can be found all over the region of New England. Colonists brought over the style from Britain as reliable and cheap home to build. Cape Cod homes were massed produced around the end of WWII as they were cheap housing and easy on materials for the returning veterans.

Features Steep roof with side gables 1 to 1½ stories Constructed of wood Sided in wide clapboards or shingles Large central chimney (Modern Cape Cod chimneys located to one end.) Rectangular shape Central-hall floor plan Shutters Hardwood floors

Examples

Some Perks of Cape Cod Housing. With this kind of architecture, it kept the buildings small and cozy as the heat created from the fire places would fill the room. The low roofs helped to hold the heat into a concentrated area. The steep roof kept snow from building up on the roof and causing it to collapse. They were designed for easy construction and efficient heating.

Federal Architecture History Roots come from the British Isles. Was adapted by three Scottish brothers from the Georgian style of Architecture. The newly formed United States, inspired by the work of the brothers, as well as Greek and Roman temples, began construction of Federal style buildings. This style was favored from around 1780 to the 1830s Details can still be seen in some American homes built today.

Features Low-pitched roof, sometimes flat roofs with balustrades Windows are arranged symmetrically around a central doorway semicircular fanlights Decorative crown or roof over front door way Tooth-like dentil moldings Palladian windows Decorative swags and garlands Oval rooms and arches Two story, rectangular construction Generally created out of brick

Examples

Perks of Federal Mainly used as office building layouts. Symmetrical shape so the ability to build side by side. Open layouts. More decorative, showy presence to them.
