What’s the Matter?

Matter is anything that has mass and All matter is made up of ATOMS. What is Matter? Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. All matter is made up of ATOMS. Atoms are the tiniest particles of an element that cannot be broken down any further. The SAME TYPE OF ATOM make up an ELEMENT.

Each element is made up of one type of atom. Atoms and Elements An ELEMENT is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances. Each element is made up of one type of atom. For example, Carbon is an element on the Periodic Table of Elements. It is made up of only one type of atom: Carbon atoms

Carbon atoms make up the element Carbon. Atoms and Elements Carbon atoms make up the element Carbon. The element Carbon is only made up of Carbon atoms. There are no other types of atoms in the element Carbon besides Carbon atoms!!

Are all atoms the same? All atoms of the same element have the same properties. For example, all oxygen atoms have the same mass and occupy the same amount of space. Therefore, all matter made up of oxygen has the same properties because of the oxygen atoms. However, oxygen atoms have different properties than iron atoms, carbon atoms, or nitrogen atoms, or any other type of atom.

There are 92 naturally occurring elements found on the Periodic Table of Elements, along with many manmade elements.

The three stages of Matter! The three stages of matter are solid, liquid, and gas! A SOLID is matter that has a definite volume and definite shape A LIQUID is a matter that has definite volume but no definite shape. A liquid takes the shape of its container A GAS is a matter that has no definite volume or shape. A gas spreads out to fill its container

A Matter of Mass All things don’t contain the SAME amount of matter. Mass is the measure of the amount of matter something contains.

A Matter of Volume Matter ALSO takes up space! The amount of space that matter takes up is called VOLUME. Think about the chalk dust on a chalkboard. Does it have mass? Volume? YES! Is it the same amount as a piece of chalk? NO

A Matter of Volume and Mass Suppose several examples of matter have the same volume but different masses. You can compare these samples by a property called DENSITY! Density is the amount of matter in a given space. (How heavy something is!) So what’s more dense… a bowling ball or a basketball? Answer: The bowling ball!

The Metric System The Metric System is a system of measurement that is based on the number 10 and multiples of 10! Measurement Unit Symbol Length Meter m Mass Gram g Volume Liter L Temperature Degree Celsius C
