What is Matter? Matter is anything you can see or touch. It is the atoms everything is made of. Matter comes in different PHASES (forms) Solid – has it’s own shape, molecules really close Liquid- takes the shape of area and little packed molecules Gas- takes shape of area and very loose packed molecules Plasma – high energy molecules slightly packed together
Examples of Phases
Changing Phases Matter can change from one phase to another. Melting – solids change to liquid Freezing – liquid changes to solids Boiling/Evaporation – liquids change to gas Condensation- gas changes to liquids Sublimation – solid changes to gas
Examples of Phase Changes
How do we group Matter? Physical Properties Chemical Properties Characteristics that can be measured and observed. Mass, Volume, Density, Color, Shape, Texture, Hardness Chemical Properties Characteristics that can allow a substance to change into a new and different substance Flammability, chemical reaction (dissolving, rusting, molding, combining)
Examples of Properties
Pure substances Pure substance are NOT mixtures, they are ALWAYS THE SAME elements (atoms) or compounds put together in the SAME AMOUNT.
Elements Matter! Elements are pure substances made of only ONE KIND of atom.
Compounds Matter too! Pure substances made of more than one element but always in the SAME AMOUNT.
