A Raisin in the Sun Today we are starting a new novel unit! In a few days we will begin reading A Raisin in The Sun. It’s a famous play about a black family living in Chicago in the mid 20th century. Today, we’re going to build some background knowledge on the time period and historical context during which A Raisin in the Sun takes place.

A Raisin in the Sun We’re going to take a look at a gif the illustrates the population changes in Chicago from 1910-2000: http://i.imgur.com/xZoKnTa.gif Once we’ve viewed the gif (I’ll let it play through a few times), respond to the questions on the front of your anticipation guide.

A Raisin in the Sun Next, you’re going to check out a few primary sources with your groups. In your packet, there are five different sources of information about Chicago during the 20th century. Decide who in your group is assigned to which document(s). Once you have your assigned document, read through it and respond to the corresponding questions on your handout. Once everyone has finished, summarize your documents with your group members and share your answers. You will be responsible for completing the rest of the questions in your packet.

A Raisin in the Sun For the rest of class, your job will be to research the author of Raisin in the Sun: Lorraine Hansberry. Using the handout as a guide, find out all you can about Hansberry – try to understand her life as best you can. It will help you understand why she wrote A Raisin in the Sun! 
