Costume Design The Pirates

Observational Drawing The starting point of all your IGCSE projects should include observational drawing For this project you are going to draw items that we collected at the beach You must create 3 observational drawings in 3 different media Pick at least two objects. A large object that you can draw in class, and a smaller object that you can take home to draw. Pick your objects carefully. Think about interesting patterns, details, materials and textures.

You have been asked to design the costumes for a new musical called The Pirates The musical is about a group of pirates who travel through time. They travel the seas committing terrible acts of Piracy throughout the ages! The costumes you will design will reflect this. You can choose either a male or female character (or both if you have time)

Mind mapping In the middle of your page, write The Pirates Make a mind map with as much detail as possible…from this mind map you will generate all your ideas…you will create a plot, location and character development, so any idea you have, write it down! If you have a thought, you record it! No self- censoring!

Figure drawing In order to create accurate fashion/costume designs, it is essential to draw the human figure in the correct proportion. With your partner: Using string to help you, measure one head length from the top of the head to the chin. Use this to help you determine the size of different body parts in relation to each other: Download the template from here: lank.jpg lank.jpg Create your own template, front, back and side views and then photocopy it.

Developing your idea Initial sketches – you should now have decided the theme and direction your designs will take You must now develop your observational drawings into initial outfit designs. At this stage you should be using your template to produce lots of sketches. Work quickly. Keep trying new ideas until you find one you like.
