Draft year: 1969 National Policy The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requires federal agencies to integrate environmental values into their decision making processes by considering the environmental impacts of their proposed actions and reasonable alternatives to those actions. NEPA requires these federal agencies to assess the environmental impacts of major federal projects or decisions such as issuing permits, spending federal money, or affecting federal lands. NEPA extends to any federal projects such as planting forests, building dams, or

Agency Responsible: EPA EPA is responsible carrying out the requirements of NEPA. Environmental Assessments (EAs) and Environmental Impact Statements (EISs) are assessments of the likelihood of impacts from alternative courses of action, and are required from all Federal agencies and these are reviewed by EPA.
