U3L2 Gramática: Las comparaciones (COMPARISONS) Sta FerreiraEl 5 de junio de 2012

To make comparisons in Spanish, follow this formula: + más (more) + adjective + que + other noun -menos (less) Por ejemplo: + Soy más alto que mi hermano. I am taller than my brother. -María es menos trabajadora que tú. María is less hardworking than you.

Practicamos… Say the following sentences in Spanish: José is taller than Cristóbal. José es más alto que Cristóbal. Danito is less serious than Nela. Danito es menos serio que Nela. Alejandra is nicer than Anabela. Alejandra es más simpática que Anabela. Álvaro is less fun than Joe. Álvaro es menos divertido que Joe.

To express the idea that two nouns are the same, follow this formula: = tan (as) + adjective + como + other noun Por ejemplo: =Nosotros somos tan inteligentes como ustedes. We are as intelligent as you all. = Natalia es tan alética como Benito. Natalie is as athletic as Ben.

Practicamos… Say the following sentences in Spanish: Rox is as cute (lindo/guapo/bonito) as Rick. Rox es tan lindo como Rick. Ramón is as young as Santana. Ramón es tan joven como Santana. Alicia is as studious as Nicoletta. Alicia es tan estudiosa como Nicoletta.

In both of these formulas, the adjectives agree with the first noun in the comparison. Por ejemplo: Sophia y Tania son tan bonitas como María. Pablo es menos alto que Diego. Nosotros somos más trabajadores que nuestros primos. Mis abuelos son más viejos que mis padres.

But certain adjectives have irregular comparative forms: Bueno (good) ->Mejor (better) / mejores Malo (bad)->Peor (worse) / peores Viejo (old)->Mayor (older) / mayores Joven (young)->Menor (younger) / menores *_______ = plural

Comparisons dont always include an adjective. Use TANTO + como instead of TAN + adjective + como Por ejemplo: Me gusta jugar al futból tanto como correr. I like to play soccer as much as to run. Me gusta naranjas tanto como manzanas. I like oranges as much as apples.
