What is an Adjective? An adjective is a word that describes or modifies a noun or pronoun. Basically, an adjective gives more information about a person, place, thing, or idea. Adjectives answer the following questions about nouns and pronouns: What kind? Which one? How much? How many? TIP: Memorize the 4 Questions that Adjectives Answer!

Proper and Common Adjectives Just like nouns, adjectives will either be proper or common. A proper adjective requires a capital letter. Examples: Japanese customs OR special customs Thanksgiving dinner OR delicious dinner Hindu beliefs OR religious beliefs Korean language OR foreign language Navajo blankets OR snuggly blanket American flag OR colorful flag

Why are Adjectives Awesome? When you are writing, you can add in adjectives to make your writing more colorful, creative, descriptive, or precise! Examples: Boring Sentence: My mom made cookies for dessert. Interesting Sentence: My kindhearted, thoughtful mom made me five moist, chewy, gooey, chocolatey cookies for my special dessert. What kind of mom? Kindhearted and thoughtful What kind of cookies? Moist, chewy, gooey, chocolately How many cookies? Five Which dessert? My special dessert

Some Examples Adjectives can be colors, numbers, personality traits, sizes, temperatures, OR any other words that answer one of the key questions (What kind? Which one? How much? How many?). Practice Time!! Identify the adjectives in the following sentences. Several students participated in the challenging relay races on the slippery, wet grass. The fun activity was difficult for the participants but hilarious for the attentive audience. Even though it was a gloomy day with bad weather, we sold fifty-two tickets to the event. The athletic girl in the blue jacket was ready for the big race.
