Pogrom: an organized massacre of a particular ethnic group, in particular that of Jews in Russia or Eastern Europe

After the assassination of Alexander II in 1881 there was a wave of pogroms in southern Russia against the Jewish community. This led to a large increase in Jews leaving Russia. Of these, more than 90 percent settled in the United States.
